We're Texas Rugby.
The University
of Texas at Austin Men's Rugby Football Club is a member of the
Western Rugby Football Union Collegiate Division I (Texas Region).
The Women's Rugby Football Club is a member of the Texas Rugby Union
Collegiate Division II. Both clubs are sanctioned by the Texas
Rugby Union, the Western
Rugby Football Union and USA
Rugby. We are members of the UT
Sports Club Association and are sanctioned by and in good standing
with the University
of Texas at Austin.
Our Club Mission Statement:
"Make the UT Rugby Clubs THE Sports Clubs of choice for the
University of Texas at Austin, its students, their parents, and
supporters."
The unique mental and physical demands of Rugby teaches the student-athlete
vital lessons in teamwork, perseverance, performance under pressure,
and leadership. Membership in the Rugby Clubs are an excellent compliment
to the outstanding academic classroom education provided at UT.
The Rugby Clubs support the University's
Core Purpose to transform lives for the benefit of society;
our player-centric game fosters the future innovators and leaders
required for success. We give the serious non-Varsity athlete an
opportunity to participate in a quality athletic program. We are
the perfect compliment to the University's Core Values through:
Learning - A caring community, all of us students, helping
one another grow. Rugby is a sophisticated sport that challenges
student-athletes playing for no more than love of the game. Rugby's
ubiquitous phrase is "with you!" "With you"
signifies not only support on the playing field, but help for teammates
and the community off of the field.
Discovery - Expanding knowledge and human understanding.
Rugby's rigorous nature forces students to examine their limits.
Players find out that they can push themselves farther and do more
than they previously thought possible. On another note, as many
foreign exchange students come from rugby playing nations, the Rugby
Clubs provide a vehicle for introduction to the UT community.
Freedom - To seek the truth and express it. Rugby
is a player's sport. On the field, the student-athlete is the only
decision maker. Rugby teaches students to quickly assess a situation
and provide the correct response in a pressure-filled, exciting
environment.
Leadership - The will to excel with integrity and the
spirit that nothing is impossible. Rugby is a tough sport. To
manage their academic load, work a part-time job, participate in
the demanding practices and endure the 80 minute matches requires
students to dig down deep inside themselves, both on the field and
off. They learn what they can truly achieve individually along with
the even greater successes that can be obtained when working in
concert with the team.
Individual Opportunity - Many options, diverse people
and ideas; one university. We are a serious alternative to Varsity
athletics. We give our students the opportunity to participate in
structured college athletics adnd the ability to represent their
university. In addition, any club member can assume a leadership
role by becoming one of the officers responsible for the day-to-day
administration and management of the team.
Responsibility - To serve as a catalyst for positive
change in Texas and beyond. By participating in the Rugby Clubs,
players not only supplement their own education process, but through
the Clubs' community service efforts they have a positive effect
on the Austin community…and as they move on, in the state and
the nation.
USA Rugby Collegiate Code of Conduct:
"Student athletes and coaches who participate in collegiate
rugby represent their
colleges and are ambassadors of collegiate rugby in the United States.
As such,
collegiate rugby players and coaches are expected to behave with
dignity both on and off
the field, and should not tolerate or indulge in behavior which
would reflect negatively on
the college, USA Rugby, or the image of collegiate rugby. Any breach
of this Code of
Conduct will be forwarded to the appropriate disciplinary committee
for action."
